Finally,
we took a little extra time to visit a small tributary of the
Little Beaver Creek, near Lisbon, Ohio, where we were able to
collect many of the same species previously mentioned. Beaver
dams had somewhat changed this usually shallow stream into deep
pools. This stream is also a part of the Ohio River drainage.
By this time, I was a little tired, so I was glad to have Mark
Binkley step up and really take control of the seining. Additional
species we encountered in the Little Beaver tributary included
yellow bullhead, fantail darter, stonecat, Nocomis chubs, and
many hybrid sunfish that looked to be a cross between the bluegill
and green sunfish. Only a few unhybridized sunnies were found
of both bluegill and green sunfish. The blacknose dace in this
stream, and in tiny waterways feeding an adjacent swamp, were
in good condition, with the males displaying their coppery red
longitudinal bands.
I would
like to thank all of those who attended and Lloyd Ginnert for
his courtesy in allowing us access to Eagle Creek. I look forward
to future activities and getting to know some of the other Ohio
NANFA members. I was hoping Mark Smith in Columbus, could have
attended. I have talked with him many times and have yet to meet
him! Well, another time. Also Nick Zarlinga of the Cleveland Metroparks
Zoo unfortunately had other commitments. All in all, it was a
great weekend and I look forward to it again! Enjoy the photos!
Our Ohio region hopes to gather again in June or July.
