I hate it when I do this. I found the e-mail from Texas Natural History Collections. This is a quote. "The preservative of choice is 10% buffered Formalin. Here, we usually knock out the fish with clove oil (mixed with a little ethanol) first, then put them into formalin. Not only is it more humane for the fish, but it results in nicely preserved specimens (mouths not open, bodies not contorted)."

I hope this helps and doesn't confuse matters more.

Back on the list a-ha!  Clove oil works well. I agree with Peter.  I have had some conversations with the
curators-in-the University of Texas Natural history collections and they recommended clove oil to relax them and then submit with IPA.
In my experience this worked far better than IPA alone.

Hi Peter. You said clove oil also knocks fish out temporarily. Can it
be used as a short term tranquilizer, say, for fish photography? What
strength would it have to be?

Yes, it could, but their fins might be relaxed and less like to be fully extended, plus they will tend to sink to the bottom and lie on their sides. In terms of the dosage it really depends on how long you want to have them out for. If you only need it for a minute then I'd say one drop to a liter would be fine, but you would need to experiment a little bit to be sure. I offer no guarantees on dosages as I've not really tried to keep fish alive with it.
