This whole feminization of males phenomenon has been described with brown
trout in English rivers that are downstream from wastewater treatment
plants. Caged males held in these streams started to produce female-specific
proteins like vitellogenin, found only in eggs. Caged males in reservoirs
far removed from high volumes of treated wastewater showed no such symptoms.
The assays for chemicals that could possibly stimulate these processes are
still demanding and can be done with only state-of-the-art laboratory
equipment.

We can only hope that any snakeheads in the Potomac are more sensitive to
these chemicals than other fishes, including exotic smallmouth. . .
