I can, because 3 foot long is the same as 36 inches, which is twice as long as an 18". To go one step further, a 125 gallon is usually six feet long, twice as long as 3 feet. So the fish is half the length of the tank and twice the width. Sort of like locking you up in a bathroom, or bubble, for the rest of your life, which ultimately will be shorter than normal because of the inadequate living conditions.

If you do this, I'd certainly suggest having an out (before you commit) so you can provide a decent home for it when it starts getting about 24 inches.

  1) Will a 125 gallon tank be sufficient? If they get to 3 feet long, I can't see why they would fit in a 18" wide tank.

  2) Where could I get a captive-bred specimen?

  3) Will it learn to come out for food? SOme of my catfish are so nocturnal that they will never, ever show their face in while the lights are on.

  Thanks,
