PYGMY MADTOMS TO BE RELEASED INTO CLINCH RIVER

WHO: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Conservation Fisheries, Inc.
The University of Alabama, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency
The Nature Conservancy, private landowners

WHAT: Invite you to witness the historic release of captive bred pygmy
madtoms (an endangered fish) into the lower Clinch River.

WHEN: Thursday, May 3, 2001, 1:00 P.M. EDT (rain date TBD)

WHERE: Frost Ford area, near Sneedville, Tennessee. Approximately 2
hours northeast of Knoxville, near the Tennessee/Virginia border.
See written directions below.

WHY: The partners have worked together on habitat protection and
riparian restoration on the lower Clinch River to improve the
river system and enable the return of captive bred pygmy madtoms
that were caught at the very spot where they will be returned.
You will be able to interview the partners, all of whom will be
at the release, and witness the collection and release techniques
of biologists.

Directions: From Knoxville, take I-40 East to I-81 East to the US25E
Morristown exit (take I-81 West from Kingsport/Johnson City to
this point). Proceed north through Morristown on 25E to Bean
Station where you will turn right on 11W East. Proceed about 5
miles before turning left on TN 31 North. Hang on tight over
Clinch Mountain curves before you come down to the Clinch River
and follow it to the East. Turn left/North over the one and only
bridge over the river (towards Sneedville), but then turn
immediately right/East after crossing the bridge (Jimmie Roberts
Rd). Drive about 5 miles up the river valley until you see the
field on your right ending and the road bears sharply left just
above the river. This is Frost Ford below you! The turn-off to
the right is at the end of the field at the START of the left
curve.
