Any tub designed to capture an animal through its falling in and not being
able to get out is a form of a "pitfall" trap which is commonly used in
small mammal, invertebrate, and herptile surveys. While very effective in
capturing critters of various kinds they do have one primary drawback in
that they are totally non-selective and therefore catch large numbers of
non-targeted critters including any protected species potentially found in
the area. Care should be exercised in using any kind of trap!
