Chip Rinehart, Dustin Smith (both from SC), and I are planning a
collecting trip to the Dan River in North Carolina north of
Winston-Salem on May 4. If the water is clear it can also involve some
snorkeling. A few years ago I wrote an article for Aerican Currents
describing the river and its fishes which are both abundant and
diverse. Many should be getting near peak colors by then or actually
spawning. Common fishes are rosyside dace, satinfin shiner, cutlips
minnow, white shiner, crescent shiner, rosefin shiner, bluehead chub,
redlip shiner, mountain redbelly dace (in tribs), hog suckers, bigeye
jumprock, black jumprock, margined madtom (most colorful I've seen),
blue ridge sculpin, fantail darter, riverweed darter, and roanoke
darter. If you would like to participate or need more details, please
contact me off list.
