I witnessed a mass die off of freshwater mussels when I was a kid. In the
head waters of the Poca River there was lots of gas well drilling. For some
reason huge amounts of very fine sediment and salt was flushed into the
river. after a few weeks it cleared back up but all of the mussels were dead.
There had at one time been a huge population of mussels in this river. You
could pick up a bushel basket full at any time and they were very big 9" or
more long weighing at least a pound each. It been a long time since I looked
for mussels in the Poca River but I know that five years later there were no
mussels to be found.
