These were pretty hard, about like a really thick jam. It was more wet and
horrifying than painful.

To be honest the first time I saw them I thought they looked icky too. But
after looking at them close with a magnifying glass and seeing the structure
they kinda lost that feeling. Were the ones you had then solid hard jelly?
These are quite hard, I would imagine it would hurt to be hit by one thrown
with any real malice.
