I think you got the spelling for baster correct.

I use a pair of chopsticks to do maintainence (remove dead leaves,
move pebbles around) in a small planted 10G tank. The fish aren't scared
of a pair of thin sticks as much as my entire hand. Additionally, the
plants aren't damaged as much. I can see the sticks more easily from the
front (with my hand inside, the angle is usually not very good).
