From: Milius, S. 2003. Fish that decorate. Science News 163 (for 15 Mar):
165-166.

Male three-spined sticklebacks, when offered bits of shiny red foil, will
use them to decorate the entrance to their nests. Nests decorated with shiny
red foil are preferred by females over drab, undecorated nests.

A second unrelated study indicates that male sticklebacks with sleeker,
compact nests had more "robust immune systems and high androgens."

Conclusion - "Females go for the glitter to find the best guy."
