Maybe somebody was teasing about the local killie group.

It is also entirely possible somebody out your way was raising them in a
back yard pond - at least for the summer months. :) They are maddeningly
hard to get out of ponds though.

There is always that third option. Once had a Woolworth's pet section lady
tell me that fancy guppies were a cross of wild guppies and Bettas. I think
they also sold me some warm water goldfish when I was a kid.
