I have power filters on about half my tank for the current. Agitating the
surface should increase the oxygen in the water. I have never believed that
the small amount of charcoal in the filter could do much. The rest of my
tank have very small foam filters they work great. Water changes are far
more important then filters. The idea of a perfectly balanced aquarium is a
nice goal but think of the millions of gallons in the natural ecosystem.
Even the natural systems get constant water changes. I have a friend who
works with goodeids they are sensitive to water quality some get 50% water
changes daily.
