I don't like charcoal, either. I strongly beleive in sponge filters, and
make my own. They provide great filtration, have a lot of surface area for
biological filtration, provide oxygen and surface agitation, don't trap fry,
can be "Seeded" for use on a new tank, don't use motors, and best of all they
are dirt cheap.
