I should mention that there are various mixtures of de-icing substances.
Commercial de-icing mixes may contain salts of calcium, potassium, magnesium
as well as sodium. I recommend reading the label carefully, and testing a
teaspoon or so in a gallon of water to see if it raises carbonate hardness
or overall hardness.
