Look underneath. Check the size of the anus compared to the genital opening.
On the larger species of pike this works very well. I don't know how well it
will work on pickeral. The other things is, without a group to look at to
get a feel for the differences, it might be tough. The large pike the
difference is great. I read somewhere and the author used some vivid
descriptive words to describe the difference, but they escape me now.
Something maybe to the effect that females look like and exclamation point,
males a colon? Hope that helps.

Beautiful fish! Fixing this trait would be great. Grass/ Redfin pickeral are
awesome fish for aquariums, all the attributes of large Esox in a small
package. Plus they don't mind warmer water, something the bigger species shy
away from. Probably out of all the toothy predator fish from around the
world, this one has to be one of the best suited to home aquariums of
"normal" size.
