Oh yeah, we dug all parts of both ponds with shovels, or 5 foot back hoes as
they are known. The only part I cheated with was scraping the valuable
black dirt and sod off the bigger gar pond with the blade on my garden
tractor. It was easier than trying to scrape it with shovels that do not
have a flat edge. The ponds all could have been dug in a total of 12 hours,
but it took longer. THe depth I mention is not the entire pond. They all
have shallow ends, and the shore tapers out atleat a quarter of the length
before dropping fast into the deepest parts which are holes in the middle of
one end of the pond. The killi pond started as a stump being dug out of a
flower bed that was here when we moved in. The other pond was an area in
the backyard that grass didn't grow good and was out of the way. The
addition to that went in the most logical spot near it. When my web site
gets done everyone can see them. I am serious, its not very hard if you
don't have back or leg problems, and have a buddy to help out. Its harder
work by yourself, and would be impossible if you had any problems with your
body. I am glad I don't yet, otherwise I would need to be wealthy to hire
someone to dig these holes for me. I have been digging liner ponds since I
was 11 or so, so I am used to how to do it. There is a little technique to
it that makes it easier.
