Great book, and at this price a steal. Some color plates in the center. Most
accounts have a black and white picture with them as well. Covers a broad
range of species, though shuns larger fish ( which is understandable in the
format this book is put forth), covers feeding, spawning etc. when
information was available, which in most cases are most of the fish. Some
fish have the "see previous / X species account" for information, but that
is fine. Gives you somewhere to research deeper.

The only critism I have heard of this book is the supposed promotion of
keeping protected fish. I, however, find this to be unwarranted. It's clear
in the beginning that all collectors/keepers research all regulations
pretaining to the fish of their interest, the states involved and transport.
I believe the information provided on any fish outways anyone misconsrtueing
and not following applicable laws. Not to mention it could deter someone
thinking of trying a questionable fish by finding out its requirments are
tough to meet. On the other end of the spectrum, it would give information
on wether or not someone who was willing to jump hurdles and through hoops
to get the nessacary permits required for any of these species, if possible.

So , summing up my synopsis, great book and at this price do not pass it up
if you have any interest in keeping North American fish in an aquarium, or
ever plan to - even if its a remote chance. I just wish I would have waited,
but don't regret the orginal price. It is an impressive book in size alone,
slightly thinner than the Fishes of Arkansas. Not to mention the beautiful
shot of longears on the jacket.
