Tony,
Page's _Handbook of Darters_ says a subspecies "in the White River of
Arkansas and Missouri, has longitudinal rows of small red spots on the
body."
I don't know if other populations or rainbow darter have red spots. What I
do know is that the "species" is highly variable and probably represents a
species complex with many unrecognized forms.
