I have collected Banded Sculpin -Cottus Carolinae
-in the Arkansas Ozarks in 80 or even 8o plus water in
Sugarloaf Cr . These were always small specimens
upstream in shallow water near the east Sugarloaf
bridge on state 14 near Lead Hill Arkansas .Size 1-3
inches . Downstream in the abandoned old Lead Hill
area in deeper water I have seen schools of much
larger scupins which I took to be the breeding
population which had returned to deeper water after
spawning upstream earlier in the season . The largest
of these looked to be in the 8 inch range . Might it
be that the smaller/younger specimens are more heat
tolerant ? I didn't take a temperature reading in the
deeper water area but Bull Shoals Lake itself commonly
reaches 85 degree temperatures in the surface or
shallow water areas . That means 80 plus temps found
above and below the "big sculpin area" .Banded Sculpin
is the only species I have identified in this area .
