I was able to count lateral line scales on an Angel fish that came from Peru
to distinguish it as scalare or altum. I did this by laying it flat in a wet
tray and counting with the aid of a magnifying lighted viewer. The fish
survived unharmed and it was identified as a scalare. It only took about a
minute to do this.
