I see this on occassion. I have one right now that is nearly pure black
except its back, and belly. It seems crustacean based diets enhance this
trait in fish not showing it as strongly. Awesome fish for a pet, or to save
a bad day fishing for sure. Even rarer are blue strains that keep the bright
profuse blue spangeling most young have into adult hood. I also have seen
some strange ones that came from northern Minnesota that lack any blue
markings. The bigger they get, the stranger they look.
