We usually use air pumps on fish that require more O2, like shiners and most
darters, but many of the fish we get here such as Elassoma, Enneacanthus and
various killies come from pretty stagnant water so they don't need quite as
much. I have thought about using the salt, but wasn't sure if it would
provide enough effect to make it worthwhile. I also worry that it may
adversely affect the water quality of fishes that come from very soft, very
acidic water.

I run air pumps on long journeys, but keep the water cool by floating tied
fish bags of ice in the cooler. The cooler water helps calm the fish and
reduce respiration.

Also throw in a few pinches of sea salt to help kill parasites.
