I agree that another "native" choice for algae removal would be Mexican
goodeids. I have had Ameca splendens totally remove all algae in a very
heavy tank in a week. I normally take any stringy green algae from other
tanks and put it in their's and it is always gone by the next day. They
love the stuff, even better than mollies. I also keep several other species
of goodeids with varying levels of algae removing success.

If its the black, short hair algae (I missed the original post, sorry) ...
you may be out of luck. Once the stuff gets a foot hold, it doesn't
release it and just keeps growing. Phosphate and nitrate removers have no
effect - it always seems to find enough to survive. I've seen aquarists
break down tanks and scrub them with hot water and clorox, only to have
the stuff survive somewhere and come back.
There are a few fish that eat hair algae, in either case. You can try
Amano (ALgea Eating) shrimp -- they love to pick at it. True SAE's will
help, good luck finding them. (Good luck identifying them if you do. :)
Three more common fish have an affect. The Rosy Barb is claimed to --
I've never treid 'em myself. For natives, try Sailfin (or any other type
of) Mollies -- they love to pick at algae, and, IMNHO, are a far better
algae eater than any of the so-called "algae eaters" you'll buy. If you
can find them, by far the best algae eater I've ever seen is Ameca
splendins. And if you can find a lot of this pretty little goodeid, let
me know! I want about 10. :)
