Rhonda,
I did some more investigating about shipping live fish. I called the United
Parcel Service (UPS) national 1-800 number and requested information on
shipping live fish. She looked it up in their book of restrictions and
regulations and found that UPS will not ship live fish. I also spoke with my
local UPS delivery person; he also confirmed that UPS does not ship live
fish. This, after I received a box of fish via UPS. Go figure is right.
Next, I called the United States Postal Service (USPS) 1-800 number and
requested information on shipping live fish. He looked up the regulations
and restrictions and informed me that the USPS does ship live fish. Today I
went to a different post office from the one I tried to ship thru on Tuesday
and asked what their regulations were on shipping live fish. The employee
could not find the regs, but called me at work and said shipping live fish
was allowed, but that some of the airlines had had bad experiences with bags
leaking, dead smelly fish, or boxes breaking up and therefore refused to
carry live fish as freight. The same postman was of the opinion if the fish
were double bagged and surrounded by plenty of absorbant paper and inside a
styrofoam box, that one would encounter little problem/resistence in shipping
live fish.
