I was lucky to get some encouragement from esp. my father with fishing and
general outdoorsy interests. Where I really got experience running around
outside was in Boy Scouts. I was lucky, our troop was almost paramilitary in
terms of doing regular camping and hiking trips to interesting places in PA,
MD and VA. One long weekend that is still vivid to me was a trip to Camp
Teddy Roosevelt on the Chesapeake Bay near Scientists Cliffs. Being able to
spend almost 24 hours a day along the beach and tributary creeks was a major
revelation. And luckily I didn't outgrow it...
