A couple of months ago this list had an interesting thread on state fish and
why certain candidates were selected. I sorta knew the story of the Illinois
State Fish - the blue gill - and knew that it was selected by the school
kids from a list of six candidates (including two exotics) but didn't have
time to document it when so many of you had neat stories and speculations to
spin.

It turns out that the Hawaiian state fish was also picked by the kids. They
outvoted the sport fishing adults (many of whom may have held back not
wanting to pick on a bunch of children).

Those and other stories can be pulled up at the above site. There are even
state soils in some cases! (Get the dirt on Delaware ...)
