Is there any true authority for assigning common names?

Mark,
It seems that the days of colloquial names are long gone. Organizations
like the Audubon Society and the American Fisheries Society have assumed
the authority on "so-called" common names. It seems that nobody knows what
a mud fish, or butter cat is these days, unless you are talking to a
Cracker, like me.
