I remember when michigan didn't used to be this frozen tundra I'm
seeing
right now, and big long plants growing at a fairly slow,
Sounds like Vallisneria americana all right, although I have never seen
them quite two inches wide. They are often over a 36 inches long and
usually an inch or so wide. If you were further south, it might be a
Sagittaria.
Maybe someone knows more, and we can get a definite answer.
