Where did you see these? In Washington? At this time of year? Doesn't
sound right. I am no expert but that picture may be one of the smaller
species and not the large species that we normally think of. If anyone has
been to Atlantis in the Bahamas, they had one (I believe it was Manta
birostris, the larger species) in their 2million gallon tank. It was 6ft
wide when they captured it and within a year or so grew to 11 ft wide. The
problem soon became how to get it about 300 yds to the beach because it was
getting too big for the tank. Some of us thought the best way might have
been to use a huge slip and slide. I have to say that it was probably _THE_
coolest thing that I have ever seen! It was a fantastic display. I don't
even think that the captive whale shark that is at the "Ring of Fire"
aquarium in Tokyo could even be that cool (although, I should probably check
it out just to make sure.....)
