The March/April 2004 issue of Arkansas Wildlife has an EXCELLENT article on
alligator gar entitled "Fish of Dreams" by Keith Sutton.

It is lavishly illustrated with great old black and white photos, a post
cards (from the sport-fishing heyday of 50s), and photos (some of "wanton
slaughter"). It includes a wealth of historical information, sidebars on
uses of gar scales/skins, angler recollections, and alleged attacks on
humans.

And if that were nmot enought to tickle the fancy of any primitive fish
fan....

The March 2004 issue of Wildlife in North Carolina has an equally EXCELLENT
piece on Amia called "The Beauty of Bowfin" by David Lee (co-author of the
"Fish Atlas"). It has spectacular full-color illustrations (one showing
anatomy of the "lung"). Plus sidebars on names, evolutionary family tree,
and paternal behavior. The author also describes his failed attempts as a
student to prepare a bowfin skull.

These are must read articles for those of us who love our ganoids -- and
who among us does not ?
