Here in Louisiana, and especially the southern part of the state, we call
large cockroaches (in the order Orthoptera) "Water bugs", I believe because
they are confused with giant (true) water bugs (Hemiptera) which
superficially look like cockroaches and fly around lights at night in swampy
areas. Consequently, many people believe cockroaches will bite/sting, which
they don't, giant water bugs will bite if caught, and painfully.
