NANFA-- The demise of my red shiners

My red shiners have suddenly begun dieing. They start having problems swimming
uprite and then turn over permanently. They appear healthy and are full
bodied with plenty of appetite. One thought is that they are all males and
they have all been in full mating colors for three months. Could they be
hurting each other in their hightened state?

I lost two before I went out of town last week and one died while I was gone.
Another on wrong side up when I got home today. His still has all his color.
Any ideas on a cause and/or cure?
