Angler Catches Snakehead in Virginia

Associated Press
Tuesday, May 11, 2004; 6:31 AM

State officials in Virginia said an angler has reeled in that state's first
snakehead fish -- an Asian species known for its voracious appetite and for
its ability to wriggle on land. Robert Hinds Junior caught the 12-inch fish
on Friday in a Potomac River tributary near Mount Vernon.

The snakehead has worried environmental and marine officials and just last
week, a pond in Maryland was drained before it was declared clear of
snakeheads after one was snagged by a fisherman.

Virginia fisheries biologist John Odenkirk said he and his crew spent
yesterday surveying the area and said they came up with 25 fish species, but
no other northern snakeheads were found.

Odenkirk believes the fish was dumped by someone who no longer wanted to
care for it.
