I have seen green sunfish spawning-in-three inches, and probably a bit
smaller.

I think you might have caught a Fundulus sciadicus. They have a gold stripe
on the back that glows in the sun, runs from the drosal fin to the shoulder
area. The fins are red ( on males). I have some that are deeper bodied, and
they color up to a gorgeous metallic blue/chrome sheen on the sides with red
in there, but not really in any bands or certain pattern. I just thought of
that when you said it looked like a Notho, that was one person first
impression when he saw my sciadicus.
