Geoff,

Southern redbellies (SRBD) should have two horizontal stripes. The upper
may be thinner or broken into spots. They also have very fine scales that
are essentially invisible without magnification. This gives them a velvety
appearance. If you can easily find individual scales, they are likely not
SRBD. There is a photo of one of Klaus' fish at

upper stripe is broken into dots.
