Found this is a book (Eifrig, C.W.G. 1930. Our Great Outdoors: Reptiles,
Amphibians, and Fishes.) and found it interesting:

Regarding eels...

"In Europe they are suspected of raiding vegetable gardens, as they are
supposed to have a fondness for peas. Since frogs have been found in their
stomachs, perhaps that is what they are stalking on their nightly forays."
