NANFA-- Tangerine darters

the way to see tangerine darters is while snorkling. they are incredibly
inquisitive. often 4 or 5 will tag along with you. kind of like a family. i
have taken a lot of nanfa folks out to see these critters. they will come
right up to you and rest in your hand if you are patient and non threating or
thashing about. gotta snorkle. the very large and intense males will be in
the powerful outflows of rapids and falls. a hard area to hold on in but that
is where the king males reside. at one point last year i observed 8 or 9 all
from one view point. there were probably well over 100 tangerines just in one
1/4 mile stretch of a narrow mountain stream. stunning. they seem so calm and
content while cruising about. i wonder why w/ their bright color that
predators dont force them into hiding or skittishness. lots of bass and
massive rainbow trout shared their habitat and i would think eager to make a
meal of them.
probably my favorite darter.
