I don't know about spinal deformity - more like selective breeding. Looks ugly to me. I see no purpose in making a fish smaller bodied.
Has anyone seen the fish that was genetically altered to glow in the dark (or blacklight)? There was a short article in a magazine. The scientist mixed jellyfish genes into the fish. The purpose was to be able to view the fishes internal organs better. Word got out about it on the Asian market and is now very popular. There are plans to bring it stateside. The fish imported will only be sterile males.

I looked at it, looks like a spinal deformity to me. I have some redbreasted
sunfish young that turned out like this. Does anyone want them? Big bucks,
kaching. Only kidding, since they are long gone as feeders. I can see the
draw to long finned or alternate ( sports) color varieties, but deformed
fish just don't cut it for me. If I could find leusistic green sunfish (
golden sunfish sold for pond stocking in Texas at sometime) I would try to
breed them for aquarium use. Apparently these are not around anymore.
