Unlike bowfin eggs, the "other caviar," gar eggs are toxic. There are not a
lot of data on the subject, however, and just how toxic and to which species
is largely guesswork.

Some experiments indicated that mice were poisoned when fed gar eggs (eggs
were from longnose gar, I believe; I can check later if you're interested).
Also, I have it on very good authority that George Moore, dean of Oklahoma
ichthyologists, swallowed gar eggs in the field once and became very ill as
a result.
