Some time ago a request was made for information
on collecting fishes in Central / South America . Mr
Richard S. Linder responded with a number of comments
and suggestions on the subject . One suggestion was to
prepare for an out of country trip by contacting the
North American Native Fishes Association to
participate in a local collection expedition . I also
recomend contacting NANFA . They are a very helpful
bunch of people who will share their knowledge freely.
There are numerous species of madtom catfishes
within the U.S.A. which are suitable aquarium
subjects. Many are relatively small ( 6 inches or less
)and rather colorful . Only a few species have been
spawned in captivity so those wishing a challenge
would be making a real contribution by publishing
spawning reports on any of the species of madtoms.
There is the chance to be a pioneer in reporting the
first captive spawning of most species . The absolute
thrill of collecting your own aquarium specimens cant
be explained , it has to be experienced . There is
also the satisfaction of being able to personally
study the fishes' habitat and then recreate that
habitat in your aquarium . You may be able to do all
that within minutes of travel time from your home or
at most during a " normal " vacation trip with a
guided expedition scheduled in . Some collection
expeditions are family outings where the kids get to
realy experience nature and help stock your tanks too
! Can it get any better ?
Persons visiting the U.S.of A. might find a
collecting expedition here to be a unique experience .
A regional contact list can be found at the NANFA
home page http://www.nanfa.org - click on regions
there .There are 4 members that have specificaly
mentioned collecting species of madtoms in their own
areas .
