Thanks for taking the time to look at the photos. The fish has been
tentatively ID'd as a sand shiner by a professor at one of our local
colleges. I some of us have serious doubts however. My initial reation was
a spottail shiner but I think now that a bigmouth shiner (Notropis dorsalis)
is the highest on the list. If this is the case, this represents a new
location for this species and is also significant because it is very rare in
Ohio. The jury is still out however and part of the fun is trying to ID is
live. I think that it will be sent down to Ohio State University for
identification as suggested by Mark Binkley. I would appreciate comments on
the bigmouth shiner idea from those familiar with this species. Also, I
wish that I could take credit for the photos but they were taken by one of
our naturalists in the park system. He is a dragon fly nut so he is
obviously pretty good with the camera. Kudos to him!

My guesses based on general appearance alone would be:

sand shiner, Notropis stramineus
mimic shiner, Notropis volucellus
or
channel shiner, Notropis wickliffi

Hope this helps,
