This post makes me think of our trip last Fall. The species composition was
very diverse when we worked the lower Black River with RK. Did you start out
at the big pool near the railroad tressel?
We had a blast there , though we didn't encounter any dispar. Tons of
shiners - weed, river and I think some mimic? As well as those infamously
fragile silversides. But the really fun part was when Mike and I - for
whatever reason I have forgotten - decided to take the tracks back to the
parking area and had to get off in a hurry without spilling our buckets when
a train came along.
Then on the way out, RK stopped his vehicle ahead of us and came walking
back to us with what I thought was about the biggest wood turtle I had ever
seen. Turned out to be an old male Blandings turtle- our first ever
encountered!
Of course it was after dusk and not a good environment to photograph
anything so this had to be a verbal record!
