Greetings sports fans,

I finally have coherent directions together for this Saturday's Tennessee
Valley super-regional collecting trip around the Flint River system in
Madison County, Alabama. I propose that we meet at 10 a.m. Central Time
along Old Mountain Fork Road, just south and east of the town of New Market,
AL.

To get there from Huntsville--travelling east on I-565 through Huntsville,
stay on the road as I-565 becomes Highway 72. Continue up & over the
mountain, and at the bottom of the descent the first intersection with a
light is Moore's Mill Road. Turn left on that, and in 1.5 miles you come to
Winchester Road. Turn right on Winchester Road, and this takes you to Old
Mountain Fork Road in exactly 11 miles. You'll cross the main stem of the
Flint River in about 7 miles, but keep going... you'll go through the small
town of New Market, cross a dammed stream on the east edge of town, and the
first road on your right will be Old Mountain Fork Road. Go down this just
over a mile, and there will be a gravel pull-over on your right by the
stream. That's the spot.

I also hope to be able to go to where Brier Fork runs into the Flint, which
is semi-whitewater, and also bushwhack up the Brier Fork towards Tennessee
into the habitat of the threatened Slackwater Darter, Etheostoma boschungi.
The Brier Fork/Flint site should be excellent snorkeling, and Mountain Fork
is OK.

All are invited, of course; maybe we'll see John Muir & Dave Foreman?
