I have lived here for 5 years and every year I have seen turtles of all
kinds laying eggs in my yard on the lake side.Usually the first night
something (raccoons or possums) dig them up and eat them. I retired in
December so I am around to watch these things more.Back in June I happened
to see the female (14 incher) laying her eggs so when she was done I covered
the nest site with an overturned garden wagon.A couple of weeks ago I looked
under it every couple of days to see what was going on.Three days ago I
could see a little hole where I thought a turtle had climbed out and
yesterday I saw three more.So curiosity got the best of me and I dug down
along side the nest and found 28 little snappers all out of their eggs and
just sitting there. I suspect they were waiting for a warmer day to come
out.I washed them off and put them in the wagon in the sun and in no time
they were all motoring around trying to get out.The 20 I herded to the lake
all disappeared in about 5 minutes. The 8 I still have lurk in 3/4 inches of
water and duckweed with their noses sticking out just like the bigguns do.
