i use the small, self-contained D-cell powered air pumps that are sold by
almost every fishing tackle store.
i prefer the "Quiet Bubbles" one 'cause the "Big Bubbles" one drives me
nuts when sitting quietly watching nature go by...and the Quiet one seems
to be more water tight.
either will run for 15 hours or longer on a pair of D batteries - i use the
rechargeable ones and if i'm going out for a day or so, simply carry a
spare set or two.

those little pumps will keep a quart of shrimp in a 5 gallon bucket alive
all day long on a boat deck.
well, the quantity of shrimp does (hopefully) decline over the course of
the day and i change the water every couple of hours or so and try to keep
them in the shade, what little there is on an open boat.
i find that shrimp are a darn site more delicate than most fish are.
50 mummichogs will live in a 5 gallon bucket for a couple of days with no
aeration and no water changes.
