Below is an excellent site by the Texas Parks & Wildlife. The number of soft
rays in the anal fin is generally the accepted means of discriminating the
two.

To further complicate things. you may note that native folk of the lower
Brazos river area are
likely to refer to both as "Blue Channels Cats."

According to TP&W, only the Rio Grande Blues have spots on the back and
sides.
