Wow, all this at a Petco? That amazes me. There are two of them around here, one in Appleton, WI, and one in Oshkosh. They both make me sick and I try not to go there. I have talked to several people who have been fired from one of the Petco's for trying to hard to provide the right care for the reptiles and amphibians in the store. And not only have I never seen a sign saying not to release fish....they don't even bother to tell people how big iguanas or various baby snakes can get. They don't ask any questions when selling you something, and even if questions are asked they either don't know or have the wrong answer. I have reported the Oshkosh one to the Humane Society for keeping their reptiles and amphibians in the wrong environments for the species and feeding them the wrong food.....of course the HS didn't really care. I got the vet they listed on their reptile tanks to take her name down because of the apauling conditions of the animals that she was not
aware of. The manager even came right out and told me he gets in trouble for trying to help sick or underweight animals....they are supposed to just stick them in the freezer and count it as DOA. Once in a very great while I have seen a big fish or two up for adoption, but most of the fish they stock and sell are half dead or sick anyway. How can a chain store vary so much in quality? The ONLY thing they do well is dogs and cats but that's only because they don't sell actual cats and dogs!

I live in South FL, it really pains me to hear people
tell me that they don't know what to do, so they just
release their fish in a canal or lake. I send them
home with a paper telling them why they shouldn't do
that and a promise that if the need arises that I will
take their fish. (I also make sure the big fish I do
sell are going into big tanks) Educating people on
this problem is a slow process that will never be
done, we just have to try to make the biggest dent
possible.
