Attack might be an overly strong word. I'm not aware of them trying to eat
anyone. I do know that they do attach to people -- as a matter of fact, the
EIS for use of lampricides (spelling?) in Champ and the other Great Lakes
includes mention of attachments detering swimmers. Apparently, it does
leave a welt, and is a bit painful.
Of course, having water drip on my head doesn't bother me... but they used
that for torture too. Its a matter of scale -- a few hundred of anything
will bother you (except dollars. Anyone who wants to torture me by throwing
dollars-in-me is welcome to! :)

Subject: NANFA-L-- flesh eating lampreys
> Came across a program on the "History Channel" about the Roman Empire and
> there was reference to emperors torturing slaves by throwing them into
> pools full of "flesh eating lampreys".....this reference was supported by
> footage showing a writhing mass of lampreys (not eels). Pools that
> supported lamprey were different from all others (baths, swimming etc.) in
> that they contained inverted pots embeded into the edges of the concrete
> walls...each pot was occupied by a lamprey....
>
> I didn't know lamprey attacked people.... is there any truth to this?
