NANFA's Regional Outreach Coordinator Charlie Nunziata was recently named Killfish Hobbyist of the Year (KHY) by the American Killifish Association (AKA).

The purpose of this award is to recognize the hobbyist who is well-rounded and devoted to the keeping of killifish. Points are awarded for participation in various AKA functions including the Killifish Award Program, Species Maintenance and Species Conservation, participation in AKA-sanctioned shows, participation in foreign shows, article contributions to the Journal of the American Killifish Association, service to the AKA through various offices and committees, and presentation of seminars/lectures-in-sanctioned events and affiliate and local club meetings.

According to KHY Chairperson (and fellow NANFA member) Lee Harper, Charlie was selected for this year's honor because of his contributions-in-both the national level and local levels. Nationally, Charlie has authored several articles (including a great article on breeding sheepshead minnow in the Spring 2005 American Currents) and two widely praised e-books (The Gairdneri Album and The Killifish Sourcebook), and served as Chairperson of the AKA’s Species Conservation Committee). At the local level, Charlie's work with the Suncoast Killifish Society sets an example for affiliate killfish clubs nationwide.

We congratulate Charlie on this honor, and join fish enthusiasts everywhere in thanking him for making our hobby -- whether it's killies, natives, or a combination of both -- more educational, more conservation-oriented, and just plain more fun.
